The Bare Life Review

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

The Bare Life Review is pleased to accept unsolicited manuscripts for both our print journal, and our new online platform, The Latest.

WHICH FORUM IS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR WORK?

Generally, anything timely (i.e. reviews of new books, or work responding directly to current events) should be addressed to The Latest. Likewise, very short essays (<2000 words or so), very long essays (>8000 words), or work that includes color photography, will make for a better fit online.

Fiction and poetry should, without exception, be addressed to The Bare Life Review print edition. Promising work in these categories that does not quite fit our needs will also be considered by The Latest.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

The Bare Life Review does not consider proposals or queries. Please submit completed work only.

Please note that our compensation rates have changed: We now offer $750 for accepted full-length prose pieces,  $300 for accepted poems or shorter print journal prose (<2000 words), and $100 for The Latest.

Eligibility:

Please note that our eligibility criteria have been amended for Volume 4 only. For this special climate-themed issue, we are accepting submissions not only from immigrants and asylum-seekers, but also from non-immigrant artists who have experienced displacement as a result of climate disaster.

For more information about these eligibility criteria, and the reasoning behind the temporary change, please read this note from our founders.

Translation:

The Bare Life Review welcomes work in translation. Any writers not working in English, who have not yet secured translation of their work, may contact TBLR via email. In some cases we may be able to help find a translator.

American-born translators may submit work by eligible writers, but in such cases payment must be issued to the author.

Subject Matter:

Submissions will be judged solely on artistic grounds. Your work may, but need not, deal explicitly with issues of immigration, exile, or refuge.

Length:

  • Fiction submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words. Please submit only one story at a time. We are not considering unsolicited novel excerpts at this time.
  • Non-fiction submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words. Please submit only one essay at a time.
  • Poetry submissions should include 3–5 poems, totaling no more than 10 pages. Please submit all poems in a single document.

Simultaneous Submission Policy

We accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

The Bare Life Review does not accept work that has been previously published. This includes online publications and blogs.
